Chelsea ‘Blip-O-Meter’ Reading

86-13 = 73 points

Chelsea Blip-O-Meter reading: 7.8

So this is it: We’ve basically got to beat Manchester United Limited Company at least once (and ideally not lose the other) – and that to secure a UCL qualifying finish in third or fourth place. Sure, beat them twice and hope they drop another couple of games by large margins and we could still retain the League.

Yeah, right.

But while we have fixtures against Manchester City and Spurs to look forward to, we don’t have any 6-pointers left against Arsenal with which to maximise the benefit if we did.

This year’s league is in a funny shape: 11-points separate 6th place Liverpool from 19th place WBA in one direction and third place Manchester City in the other.

The entire lower half of the table is covered by just two games (ie 6 points)

That’s a lot of teams that will still be fighting for survival down to the finish.

And not a lot of easy fixtures for anybody.

The most points needed to guarantee third this century has been 77 – the least 68.

The equivalent numbers for fourth (and a potentially tricky UCL qualifier) are 68 and 57.
