Story
There have been many great Chelsea teams and managers since the Club was founded in 1905, but very few captured the imagination of Blues supporters and defined a generation the way John Neal’s side did during the 1983/84 campaign. Memories have endured of a diverse collection of players bristling with talent, swathed in a stunningly beautiful kit and followed by a loyal army who would gather not only at Stamford Bridge but also march in their thousands to far away towns to cheer them on.
Created in the style of the classic A4-size hardback football annuals of that era, Come Along And Sing This Song, its pages filled with stunning photos, cartoons, interviews and features, isn’t just another Chelsea FC book, it’s a work of art and a fitting tribute to a brilliant team.
Written, illustrated and designed by an experienced creative team involved in many Gate 17 titles, the plan is to secure sufficient funding via Kickstarter to publish a limited edition format of the book.
Why crowdfunding? The book has already been typeset and a proof copy printed meaning the hard work has been done and there is limited risk. This has enabled us to finely detail the costs involved in publication and distribution. We have chosen to crowdfund the project because paper prices have risen significantly during the current economic downturn putting the cost of a standard print run beyond our reach. The book is A4 size and casebound meaning it’s expensive to produce, but we wanted it to be the best that it could be and that’s where our backers come in.
To help make this happen and secure a copy please support one of our many pledges which range from entry level, book only, to opportunities to meet the players who will sign your copy. This limited edition of Come Along And Sing This Song will never be on general sale meaning the best way to secure a copy is to pledge now.
Remember, if insufficient pledges are received your credit card will not be charged. It’s all or nothing. If the target of £6500 is achieved then your card will be debited and the book will go to print as soon as possible with a reputable printer who has printed many previous Gate 17 titles.
The plan is to begin distributing the book as soon as we take delivery from the printer which we would expect to be in mid to late January 2023. Backers will be kept fully informed of progress in terms of production, printing and distribution.
Risks and challenges
Thank you to those of who you who have expressed an interest in ‘Come Along And Sing This Song: Chelsea 1983-84’ by Johnny Neal’s Blue and White Army. Given that the book is already typeset with a proof copy produced, the risks are limited in terms of the team being able to deliver the project. If funding is secured, only an event that would damage or destroy the books would add to the timescale and the team would ensure that a reprint was undertaken to fulfil backers orders.
