Lucy Bronze joins Chelsea!
From the official Chelsea FC website:
Chelsea is excited to announce the signing of Lucy Bronze, with the accomplished defender joining the Blues after two seasons at FC Barcelona.
A serial winner, Bronze has put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the club and brings a wealth of experience having enjoyed plenty of success on the domestic, European and international stage.
With three Women’s Super League titles and five UEFA Women’s Champions League triumphs amongst the pieces of silverware on a glittering CV, the 32-year-old has received multiple individual honours and accumulated over 400 senior appearances in her career.
On returning to England with Chelsea, Bronze said: ‘To know I’m a Chelsea player still feels a little bit surreal. It’s obviously a club I know so much about and have done for such a long time. I’m really excited to be back in England. My family are so excited as well to get to more of my games.
‘I’m excited to be in London, to see what the capital holds and to be at a club that is renowned for winning so many trophies.’
General manager Paul Green commented: ‘Lucy will bring leadership to the group. She is a serial winner and a versatile defender. She has lots of experience and a winning mentality which we feel will fit well into the squad.’
Having won every domestic honour in England during her spells at Sunderland, Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City, Bronze signed for Lyon in 2017 where she won the domestic title and UEFA Women’s Champions League in each of her three seasons in France.
A return to Manchester City for a second spell in 2020 preceded another adventure in Europe when she joined Barcelona in the summer of 2022. During her time in Spain, she added another seven trophies to her collection including two more UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.
Alongside collective success, Bronze has seen plenty of individual recognition and notably finished runner-up for the Ballon d’Or in 2019. She scooped the 2020 FIFA Best Women’s Player of the Year award and has featured in the FIFPRO Women’s World XI on several occasions.
At international level, Bronze has been one of England’s most impressive and consistent performers since making her senior debut back in 2013. She was a key member of the history-making Lionesses squad who won the European Championship in 2022.
Last summer, Bronze helped England to reach back-to-back major tournament finals at the 2023 Women’s World Cup which took place in Australia and New Zealand, where the Lionesses finished runners-up to Spain.
Everyone at Chelsea is thrilled to welcome Lucy to the club, and we look forward to seeing her in Chelsea blue next season!
