Chelsea Transfer News: Our signings, departures and loan moves in summer 2022

From the official Chelsea FC website:

The men’s transfer window has now closed in England and most of Europe’s top leagues, and here we round up all of Chelsea’s business over the summer.

Deadline day passed in England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France on Thursday, with some other European windows staying open a little later.

Deadline deals

On the final day of the transfer window, we bought Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona and sealed a season-long loan move for Denis Zakaria. The Swiss midfielder comes from Juventus.

Raheem arrives and Kali comes in

The first signing of the new era at Stamford Bridge was a statement one with England international Raheem Sterling arriving from Manchester City.

Kalidou Koulibaly was the next big signing completed during our pre-season tour of the US, the Senegalese touching down in Las Vegas to finalise the deal. The experienced defender, a long-time target, joined from Napoli.

Spaniard signs and youth enhanced

Marc Cucurella starred during his debut Premier League season at Brighton, and the left-sided player subsequently completed a transfer to Chelsea in the first week of August.

We did not only add experience to our squad. On Wednesday, 21-year-old Wesley Fofana signed from Leicester to further bolster our central defensive options, signing a contract until 2029.

Prior to that, Carney Chukwuemeka, one of the most highly-rated youngsters in England, joined from Aston Villa, and another midfielder, 19-year-old Cesare Casadei arrived from Inter Milan.

Goalkeepers Gabriel Slonina and Eddie Beach moved to Chelsea from Chicago Fire and Southampton respectively, with the former returning to his homeland on loan until January with the Fire.

Omari Hutchinson (Arsenal) and Zak Sturge (Brighton) were two more Academy acquisitions.

Permanent departures

Marcos Alonso’s trophy-laden time at Chelsea came to an end by mutual consent on deadline day.

We bid farewell to defenders Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid) and Andreas Christensen (Barcelona) after 15 years of service to Chelsea between them

Timo Werner returned to Leipzig after two seasons at the Bridge, while Saul’s loan from Atletico Madrid ended

Emerson Palmieri moved across London to West Ham, Ross Barkley departed by mutual consent, and Danny Drinkwater’s contract ended. On deadline day, Billy Gilmour headed south to Brighton and Kenedy signed for Real Valladolid.

Charly Musonda (Levante), Jake Clarke-Salter (QPR), Matt Miazga (Cincinnati), Thierno Ballo (Wolfsburg), Karlo Ziger (HNK Gorica), George Nunn (Derby), Edwin Andersson (Stoke), Luke Badley-Morgan (Stoke), Xavier Mbuyamba (Volendam), George McEachran and Josh Tobin also departed.

Loan moves

Several players have left on loan. Levi Colwill will continue his development at Brighton, and we will have representation in the Championship in Nathan Baxter, Harvey Vale and Xavier Simons (Hull), Dujon Sterling (Stoke), Baba Rahman (Reading), Tino Anjorin (Huddersfield), and (pictured below) Ian Maatsen (Burnley).

Lucas Bergstrom (Peterborough), Jamie Cumming and Henry Lawrence (both MK Dons), Bryan Fiabema (Forest Green Rovers), Joe Haigh (Derby), Jayden Wareham (Leyton Orient), Sam McClelland (Barrow), and Ethan Wady (Woking) are plying their trade lower down the English league pyramid.

Moving abroad, Callum Hudson-Odoi has made the temporary switch to Bayer Leverkusen for his first loan. Romelu Lukaku is back at Inter Milan, Malang Sarr in his homeland with Monaco, and Ethan Ampadu has gone to Serie A side Spezia.
