“Mene, mene, tekel, parsin,” would have been understood by an Aramaic speaker as meaning “A mina, a mina, a shekel and half-shekels.” (monetary weights of decreasing value)
However, like many proto-alphabets, early Aramaic did not have vowels.
So the consonants also could be read: “Counted, counted, weighed, divisions.”
The situation is vaguely parallel to Sixties’ gags about the drug “Lsd”, which listeners would automatically associate with Lysergic acid diethylamide (“Acid”), before the pre-decimal currency punchline came: “Pounds, shillings and pence” (The sterling symbol being a highly stylised “L” – Latin “Libre”).
So while Belshazzar puzzled at some grafitti regarding money, Daniel read a message heralding Babylon’s imminent demise.
Why might this be of use to André Villas-Boas?
