PL2 preview: Under-21s travel to Norwich
From the official Chelsea FC website:
After last week’s loss, Mark Robinson’s men will be looking to get back to winning ways with a fixture against the young Canaries.
Our Under-21s began the PL2 campaign with victory over Blackburn Rovers. However, they fell to defeat against Brighton after the away side came back from two goals down to win 3-2.
Friday’s 7pm kick-off against the young Canaries at Carrow Road will be a tough encounter for our young Blues.
Last time out
In our last fixture we were on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline against the Seagulls at Kingsmeadow.
Ronnie Stutter scored a brace in the first half but Luca Barrington responded with a goal just before half-time.
Barrington then got his brace in the second half before Tom O’Mahoney grabbed what was the winner with a tap-in at the back post.
Our opponents
Norwich come into this game having also played two matches in the league so far. They have failed to record any wins.
Their first game of the season saw them lose 2-0 to Sunderland and their second game saw them share the spoils with Nottingham Forest in a 2-2 draw.
We last faced Norwich in the PL2 during the 2015/16 season and we ran out comfortable 5-0 winners. The game featured Todd Cantwell, Fikayo Tomori, Ben Godfrey and Tammy Abraham.
Old stomping ground
Alex Matos has settled into the Under-21s midfield, starting the first two games of the season. Following his summer move, the likelihood of facing his old club was high due to the new changes to the PL2.
With a return to his old club on the horizon, he speaks about his excitement about the task ahead.
‘It will be a special day for me if I am honest, playing for my new club against my old club. I made so many great memories there as a player and I will always be grateful to them for that.
‘I will be focused on the task at hand though and that is getting three points for Chelsea. We were disappointed to let our two-goal lead slip last week and we want to make amends for that.’
He added that, ‘It is very important that we keep winning games, we want to be in a good position at the end of the season. No matter who we potentially play in the play-offs, we will be ready for the challenge.’
Kick-off is scheduled for 7pm at Carrow Road this evening.
