Dave’s Ramblings – A Postcard From Baku

We came out of the airport and jumped in a London cab, which was clearly lost. The traffic from the airport, probably in homage to our London cab, was as bad as bad can be. I love watching the clock jumping up at a rate of knots. You can see why god invented Uber. During the various stops we caught site of the stadium for tomorrow’s game. I’m guessing the beer is more expensive than our last visit there.

They say the car horn is the national instrument of Baku.

Some people go to concerts for live music — in Baku, you just open your window at 8:30 AM.

Our sightseeing to date has given us what we call the polo building. It’s in mint condition. And a pop up fish market, but I don’t really want to carp on about it.

Anyway, we are the proud renters of a 1960’s decorated apartment. The owner of which owns a furniture store opposite. For those of you who remember the 60’s (not me obviously) you’d remember all the tasteful decorations along with the 1960’s household items.

In fairness it is a fascinating city, their motto is “If the wind doesn’t blow you away, the hospitality will.” I don’t think that’s really their motto, seeing as I just made it up. But they are lovely people.

We have now stopped for lunch, and maybe a small sherry. Or three. So, for now, I shall sign off as it could well be a long afternoon of, erm lunch…

On our daring return to our Mary-Quant-designed time-capsule apartment, we accidentally discovered a local tavern. After much deep and scholarly discussion (and absolutely no arm-twisting), we concluded it was our civic duty to investigate two key features:

1. The variety of local ales

2. The architectural merits of the toilet facilities ✨

Our rigorous fieldwork was such a roaring success that the establishment rewarded us with free cheesy garlic bread. Yes, FREE. Cheesy. Garlic. Bread.

I would happily reveal the name of this fine institution, but frankly… I don’t want to risk any of you turning up and diluting my garlic bread supply. Priorities.

Any questions about beautiful Baku please let me know. If I don’t know the answer (which is very likely to be the case) I will happily make it up!
