Chelsea trio receive nominations for prestigious awards
From the official Chelsea FC website:
Edouard Mendy has been shortlisted for the 2022 Yashin Trophy, while Sam Kerr and Millie Bright are up for the Women’s Ballon d’Or award.
For Mendy it is recognition for another fantastic season, during which he played a crucial role as Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time – Mendy saving the decisive penalty in the final shoot-out – and Chelsea lifted the Super Cup and the Club World Cup. The Yashin Trophy is awarded to the best goalkeeper in the world, with Mendy coming second last year. He will hope to go one better this time around.
The award is named after Soviet international Lev Yashin, who is still the only goalkeeper to ever win the Ballon d’Or, back in 1963. Mendy is one of 10 nominees.
Women’s Ballon d’Or
Bright and Kerr were instrumental as Chelsea Women conquered the WSL for the third season in a row and lifted the FA Cup twice since the last Ballon d’Or awards were handed out.
Bright started every one of our 39 games in all competitions, testament to not only her fitness but her consistency and quality. She was named in the FIFPro selection for a second straight year and the PFA Team of the Year for a third time.
On the international stage, the defender was ever-present for England as they won the European Championships for the first time, earning rave reviews for her showings in defence.
Kerr enjoyed her best season yet at Chelsea, netting 20 goals in 21 WSL appearances to comfortably finish at the top of the goalscoring charts. In all she scored 32 times, including a pair of spectacular strikes on the final day against Manchester United to clinch the title.
She received a number of prestigious accolades for her superb display in front of goal, claiming the WSL Player and Goal of the Season awards, FWA Player of the Year, PFA Player and Players’ Player of the Year, Player of the Year at the London Football Awards, and the club’s Player of the Season.
