Champions League: When is the round of 16 draw and who can Chelsea play?

Chelsea are one of 16 teams who will shortly learn our first knockout opponents of the 2022/23 Champions League. Here is all the information you need on the draw for this season’s round of 16.
The Blues were already assured of our place in knockout stages ahead of the last round of group fixtures, having guaranteed we would end Group E in top spot with our 2-1 win away at Red Bull Salzburg a week ago, but finished with a flourish by beating Dinamo Zagreb by the same scoreline at Stamford Bridge in our final game on Wednesday evening.
At the same time, the final teams to qualify for the knockout stages from the other groups were decided, meaning we now know all 16 sides who go into the draw for the next round. When and where is the Champions League round of 16 draw?
Now all of the teams who have qualified for the 2022/23 knockout stages are known, their names go into the hat for the round of 16 draw, which will take place at the House of European Football, at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The draw will be held on Monday 7 November and begin at 11am UK time.
Who is in the Champions League round of 16 draw?
Chelsea are one of eight group winners to reach the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League, alongside:
- Bayern Munich
- Benfica
- Manchester City
- Napoli
- Porto
- Real Madrid
- Tottenham Hotspur
The eight teams which finished as group runners-up also qualified for the last 16:
- AC Milan
- Borussia Dortmund
- Club Bruges
- Eintracht Frankfurt
- Inter Milan
- Leipzig
- Liverpool
- Paris Saint-Germain
Who can Chelsea play in the Champions League round of 16?
As a group winner, Chelsea are seeded in the Champions League last 16, meaning we will play the second leg of our tie at home at Stamford Bridge, and we will face one of the sides which finished second in their group.
As teams from the same country or who played in the same group are kept apart in the first knockout round, we are unable to be drawn to play Liverpool or AC Milan. That leaves us with six possible opponents to face in the round of 16 – Borussia Dortmund, Club Bruges, Eintracht Frankfurt, Inter Milan, Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain.
When are the Champions League round of 16 matches?
The first legs of this season’s Champions League last 16 ties will be played over two weeks, on 14, 15, 21 and 22 February. The teams will then play their second leg three weeks later, on 7, 8, 14 and 15 March. All matches will kick off at 8pm UK time.
