The Chelsea Firsts, Records And Landmarks In 2021/22

From the official Chelsea FC website:

One of Chelsea’s longest seasons ever provided plenty of firsts and club records to look at as our statistical review of the 2021/22 campaign continues…

Competition stats

Chelsea had 14 different scorers in our opening nine Premier League games – the earliest in a campaign a team has ever had as many players score for them in the competition’s history (excluding own goals).

Our tally of 74 Premier League points was the most since we last lifted the trophy in 2016/17 (93).

In February Chelsea became the first top-flight club to play in five competitions in the space of only 23 days (Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Champions League and Club World Cup), beating Liverpool’s mark of five in 27 days in December 2019 and January 2020.

Chelsea reached a final of a major competition for a club record sixth successive season (2016/17 FA Cup, 2017/18 FA Cup, 2018/19 League Cup and Europa League, 2019/20 FA Cup, 2020/21 FA Cup and Champions League and 2021/22 League Cup, Club World Cup and FA Cup).

By beating Chesterfield in the FA Cup we extended our competition record to 24 third-round ties unbeaten.

We played our third-highest number of games in a season, equal with 2018/19 (63) but behind 2012/13 (69) and 2006/07 (64).

We scored our third-highest number of goals in a season (122) behind 2012/13 (147) and 2009/10 (142).

Firsts and records

Against Aston Villa at home, Chelsea became the first London club to register 600 Premier League wins.

Chelsea are the first team in the top four tiers of English football to win seven consecutive away London derbies (after beating Brentford), only conceding one goal in those games.

The 7-0 win against Norwich at Stamford Bridge was the first time six goals were scored for Chelsea in a game by English players (excluding own goals) since the 6-0 win over Newcastle United in 1980/81 – when Mike Fillery, Clive Walker, Gary Chivers’ strikes were joined by a Clive Lee hat-trick.

We set a new club record for successive away wins in all competitions after beating Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Thomas Tuchel’s side won eight games in a row on our travels, surpassing the previous best of seven set in 1988/89, when Bobby Campbell was in charge, and repeated in 2019/20 under Frank Lampard.

The six games which went to extra time this season is a club record, surpassing the previous record of four set in 1997/98 and equalled in 2011/12.

Chelsea contested a club-record five penalty shoot-outs this season (one in the Super Cup, three in the League Cup and one in the FA Cup). No other top-flight team has ever been involved in more than three in a single season.

The Blues recorded three consecutive penalty shoot-out victories for the first time, beating Villarreal, Aston Villa and Southampton.

Chelsea are the first team in Premier League history to go through a whole season without ever being behind at half-time.

Chelsea’s 150th victory in European competition arrived in the home group fixture with Malmo.

Our 3,500th league game in the top-flight was away at Burnley.
