Both teams went into this game knowing only a win would be good enough to get either into the knock out stages although mathematically, any of the four teams could qualify. Iran had 3 points with the USA on 2, a draw will be no good for either team so expect some end to end stuff tonight.
All the final games in all the groups will start at the same time so I guess we will be switching channels to see how the others are doing.
6 mins the USA begin this game in full throttle, the final ball falls short.
10 mins Robinson pings in a cross to musah but volleys it over the bar
Both teams want to attack here as they both need the points, good end to end stuff in these early stages
18 mins, great cross by Dest but the keeper saves and again all the USA pressure comes to nothing.
28 mins what a chance for Weah (son of Chelsea’s George Weah) Pulisic shoots and is diverted into the air but his header comes to nothing.
33 mins and another chance for Weah, once more his composure is lacking.
38 mins GOAL! Chelsea’s Pulisic charges in and bundles the ball home, takes a knock after colliding with the keeper, doesn’t look good.
44 mins Pulisic has been off the field for 6 minutes and returns to great support from the USA supporters.
Halftime and the USA lead by a goal to nil.
Iran have been awful so far with no shots on target and hardly getting out of their half, they have to improve if they have any chance of going through.
60 mins and the USA are throwing everything at Iran in a bid to get the second goal but their defence holds strong.
69 mins free kick and Musah shoots from 25 yards and it hits row Z!
82 mins and Iran at last come close before the USA keeper grabs the ball from under the bar
The USA are dropping very deep here in an attempt to hold this one goal advantage, dangerous tactics but it’s working at the moment.
90 mins and there are nine extra minutes for the USA to hold on.
Full time and the USA get the win, Englands 3-0 win over Wales means the USA are group runners up and will face the Netherlands whilst England meet Senegal.
