Chelsea In Qatar – Spain v Costa Rica

Spain 7 – 0 Costa Rica

(Group E,  Al Thumama Stadium, 23/11/2022)

Ah, two Latin countries…the drama, the fiesta! The beautifully lit stadium certainly lived up to those expectations. Sadly the match didn’t, being something of a romp for Spain over an outclassed Costa Rica side.

Spain put out a powerful team, including our own captain fantastic, Cesar Azpilacueta, starting off  playing in a flat back 4.  They seemed determined not to fall into the same trap as Germany and  Argentina, ensuring they were 3 up on 30 minutes.

Cesar for the most part played in a very conventional right back role, staying back and staying wide, allowing Jordi Alba on the left to push forward.

When he did get the opportunity to go forward, he put in his usual telling crosses but overall, played a very steady game, did nothing wrong and contributed to a resounding 7-0 victory over a weak team (even Morata scored!).

Spain looking impressive and likely to top their group.  Definitely a team to watch.
