Chelsea In Qatar – France v Denmark

(well, ex players in this case – Ed)

France 2 – 1 Denmark

(Group D, Stadium 974, 25/11/2022)

And so to France vs Denmark, a game that brought the World Cup holders up against a team they have had difficulty beating in recent meetings.

No current Blues in either team due to Kante’s injury, but as stated previously, Manager Deschamps, and Giroud, who is now level as France’s top scorer on 51 with Thierry Henry featured for France , and Andreas Christiensen was on for Denmark..

The game started brightly with both sides equally matched, then Christensen was booked for tugging back the lively Mbappe.

Ousmame Dembele ( a Chelsea transfer target? ) came into the game bringing a good save from his header by goalie Schmiechel.

Cornelius earned himself a booking for a racking studs up tackle on Giroud, quickly followed into the book by Kounde.

Les Bleus had the best of the an entertaining first half with Dembele and Mbappe running rampant. The Danes sitting back and holding their own, although officially they had no shots on target.

Only one change at half-time from either team saw Braithwaite come on for Denmark and replace the booked Cornelius.

The crowd in the stadium was very quiet and nervous until around the hour mark, when a good period of play by the French saw several missed chances, before the Blue half erupted when Hernadez played a great cut back to Mbappe who slotted home.

The ineffective Giroud was then substituted for Marcus Thuram,

That goal woke Denmark up and a good ball played into the French box by Lingstrom caused some chaos, before Andreas Christensen scored with a header from a flick on by Andersen after an Eriksen corner. Their first real chance on target.

France had the better of the next period of play, before both sides made several substitutions,

Denmarks Braithwaite hit the post before Mbappe snatched the winner four minutes from time, sneaking in at the far post to convert an Antoine Griezmann’s cross. It was France’s sixth straight win in a World cup game and they become the first team to officially qualify for the next round. The result leaves Denmark needing a win against Australia to go through, otherwise they are going home.
