Chelsea’s Carabao Cup third round draw

From the official Chelsea FC website:

Chelsea have been drawn at home to League Two Barrow in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The draw for the third round of the League Cup took place on Wednesday night after Newcastle United’s penalty win over Nottingham Forest and was conducted by host Mark Chapman, former Forest defender Michael Dawson and ex-Magpies striker Les Ferdinand, live on Sky Sports.

The third round sees the seven English clubs competing in European tournaments this season enter the competition alongside the 25 who progressed.

Tonight’s draw was unique in that this year, the clubs were split into two pots in a bid to avoid potential scheduling issues for those competing in the Champions League and Europa League.

The 2024/25 season has seen additional European fixtures introduced and the two midweek fixture windows for the Carabao Cup coincide with the Champions League (w/c 16 September) and the Europa League (w/c 23 September) schedule.

As a result, it was decided to put the six teams competing in the Champions League and the Europa League in Pot 1 to ensure they couldn’t be drawn against each other, with teams then picked out of Pot 2 to complete those fixtures.

The remaining ten ties were then drawn from Pot 2, which included Chelsea, as usual.

The Blues will take on League Two Barrow either the week commencing 16 September or 23 September after they were the last two teams pulled out by Dawson and Ferdinand. We will confirm the date on the official Chelsea website and app in due course.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Stephen Clemence took charge of Barrow in the summer and has won two of his first three League Two games in charge, with the team sitting fourth, with only goal difference keeping them outside the automatic promotion places.

Barrow booked their spot in the third round by beating Derby County on penalties following their goalless draw on Tuesday night.

There are no replays in the Carabao Cup and extra-time is not used until the semi-final stage, meaning if the game ends as a draw, the contest will be decided by penalties.
